A collaborative approach by four partnering organisations has resulted in the development of an award-winning asbestos removal program at AIcoa's Anglesea power station.  The program, recently awarded an Alcoa Global Environmental, Health and Safely award, results from the combined efforts of Alcoa Anglesea, Western Sheetmetal, Deakin University and WorkSafe Victoria. A decision was made in 2001 to remove all remaining asbestos insulation and an investigation began into the possibility of removing it while the station was still operating. "The end result has been a significant achievement for those needing to undertake asbestos removal in hot-work areas," Western Sheetmetal managing director Tom Svaljek, said. "What we have developed here at a regional level is capable of being implemented on a worldwide basis." Mr Svaljek said he was proud of his employee's commitment to the program and its implementation at Alcoa Anglesea. At a recent award ceremony, Alcoa Australia managing director of operations Wayne Osborne acknowledged the partners had been innovative in addressing a key environmental, health and safety and operational issue. He said the online asbestos removal program now provided greater protection of employees, less heat strain and lower asbestos exposure.
